Engineers Eye [Working Title]

Prior to my move into the visual arts in 2018 I worked as a civil and structural engineer and my visual enquiries into the built environment draws heavily from this engineering background. The knowledge and skills I developed give me a very specific eye for detail and design, and an innate understanding of the hidden structures and forces at play behind the facade of buildings.

I adopt a dual approach when photographing the built environment. On one hand I use an instinctive street photography approach leaning on the idea of the flaneur as well as a slower and more considered approach similar to my landscape bog work. To date I’ve shot in both colour and monochrome using analog and digital formats to interrogate the built environment and explore options and processes.

Funding from an Arts Council’s Agility Award in 2021 allowed me to undertake an initial period of research for this work. Once my ‘Beneath | Beofhód’ project is complete I intend to develop new work focusing on the built environment and explore deeper into the overlap of my engineering background, photographic practice and sense of self.

Check out my ‘Façadier’ series for more recent work in this vein.
